What is the Midnight Effect? A Metaphor to Help Manage Chronic Illness
Have you heard of the Midnight Effect?
This metaphor I created explains what it’s like to deal with the unpredictability of living with a chronic illness.
It helps me conceptualize that sudden moment when my energy completely depletes, like someone flicking a light switch.
The kicker? For those of us with chronic fatigue, time doesn’t play by the rules. The Midnight Hour can strike anytime, anywhere. And when it does, we have no choice but to pause, retreat, or reset.
If you experience fatigue like I do with ME/CFS, you may struggle to explain what’s happening in your body when you hit that brick wall and withdraw.
My wish is that you can use the Midnight Effect metaphor to understand yourself and be understood by those you love.
How Does the Midnight Effect Work?
The Midnight Effect can be understood in three simple parts:
The Clock Strikes Midnight
Imagine living with an internal clock that doesn’t follow the usual rhythm.
One moment you’re going about your day and the next, your energy vanishes completely without warning. It’s like a switch flips, and you’re forced to stop.
2. Pause and Reset
When “midnight” strikes, there’s no pushing through it. There’s no exercising your way out of it. I know. I’ve tried this! You want to keep up, but you need to listen to the message your body is telling you.
If your body demands immediate rest–whether you’re in the middle of a conversation, a work project, or a simple chore–ignoring it only leads to a bigger crash later.
3. Unpredictable Timing
Unlike a real clock, this one doesn’t give warnings or follow a set schedule. Midnight might come once a day, multiple times, or stay longer than expected. Learning to adapt in the moment is the only way forward.
This metaphor paints a clearer picture of what it’s like to live with sudden energy crashes. Use it to communicate your experience to others, and to remind yourself to honor your limits.

3 Ways The Midnight Effect Helped Me Manage My Illness
Over 15 years ago, I got sick. Really sick. One minute, I was Cinderella dancing at the ball. But the next, midnight struck and I was locked out of the castle with only one glass slipper. Everything changed in an instant I couldn’t predict.
I bounced from doctor to doctor trying to figure it out, but no one heard my whole story. No one could construct a cohesive picture about why I couldn’t get out of bed, why I couldn’t do simple tasks without crashing.
I was eventually diagnosed with ME/CFS, but my problems were far from over. I had to learn not just how to live with these unpredictable symptoms, but also how to understand and explain them.
Enter: “The Midnight Effect”. Using my own story–trials and errors, lifestyle changes, energy pacing practices, and identity reinvention–I created this metaphor to help us better understand the realities of life with a chronic condition. It will also help you explain to others what’s happening, because being understood is so important in preventing the loneliness that comes with chronic illness.
It has helped me in three fundamental areas of life (and can help you too!):
Self-Reflection + Acceptance
The Midnight Effect reminds me that these crashes and “resets” are now part of my daily life. And just because my body signals that it needs rest, doesn’t mean I’ve done something wrong.
This awareness offers me immense self-compassion and helps me accept the way I am instead of the way I used to be.
Takeaway: If you’re struggling with the unpredictability of your condition–or feel the emotional toll of how uncontrollable your time can be–this metaphor can give you self-acceptance and validation.
2. Communicate + Advocate
For years, I treated my ME/CFS as an insular experience. I withheld it from my veterinary clients, downplayed it in my relationships, and tried to brush it under the rug to distance myself from its volatility.
But I eventually figured out that bringing my disease into the light and giving it a name (Vivi) was liberating. I discovered there were others, many others just like me, who felt confused, unheard, and unwell.
It was only when I leaned into concepts and metaphors like The Midnight Effect and Spoon Theory that I found the language to communicate better. And the more I opened up about my illness, the more I felt empowered to become an advocate and a voice for others who feel invisible.
Takeaway: If you can’t find adequate words to explain your symptoms, fatigue, or sudden energy crashes, this metaphor offers you a clear, simple way to convey your experience and advocate for your needs.
3. Wellness + Coping Strategies
I’m not always good at slowing down. In fact, I used to be an athletic, active equine dentist who operated a mobile veterinary practice. ‘Slowing down’ was not in my vocabulary.
The Midnight Effect reminds me that slowing down is not a choice anymore. Knowing that the crashes will happen and that much of it is out of my control calms my anxiety about running out of energy.
Finally, whenever I am forced to rest and reset, I know that I’ve been here before. This pause will not last forever.
Takeaway: If you don’t know what would help manage your chronic illness better, this metaphor reminds you of the importance of pacing, energy conservation, and patient self-care when you feel burnt out.
‘It’s Midnight’: Your Codeword for an Energy Crash
I don’t want you to just share the three-part Midnight Effect with your friends, family, or partner. I also want you to walk away with a real, USEFUL tool you can use daily.
What tool is that? Your own secret codeword: ‘It’s midnight’.
How it works:
Share this secret codeword with people you trust.
Communicate what you’ll need if you ever use it (space, alone time, a ride home, etc.).
Say ‘It’s midnight’ when you hit a sudden energy crash
This is life-changing for you AND the people that care about you. It will help you communicate what you’re going through fast. And it will help them understand what you’re going through and even how to help.
Midnight Doesn’t Have to be the End
To me, The Midnight Effect is more than just a metaphor. It’s a tool to help you reclaim understanding and control over your life with chronic illness. This concept can offer clarity in the chaos, whether you’re dealing with energy crashes, advocating for yourself, or finding peace in unpredictability.
But this is just the beginning. Does the Midnight Effect resonate with you? Imagine how it could transform others' perspectives, whether it’s your team, audience, or loved ones.
I’d love to bring this metaphor and my personal and clinical journey to your next event, seminar, or conversation. I’m confident we can inspire more understanding, compassion, and action in the world. Fill out this form to get in touch with me.
